Three communications technologies that have been the most influential in my life are computer/internet, cell-phone, and the television.
Olivia really loves the use of technology, whether it’s the computer, I pod, or a cell phone. An influence about her having interest in technology is that she doesn’t live in a good area. So she doesn’t go out as much as she would like to, which leaves her with different technological items as most of her options for enjoyment and to connect with others in her life at home. She knows how to use her items of technology very well because she can create a my-space online, she is good with emails, playing around with her I-pod and is great at texting others. As a teacher, it is important to know this because I could assign her work to do online or I could give her homework that she can do on the internet. There are also websites I can give her or she can even find on her own to research and study information based on what we are covering in a class. I could also assign group work to take home as homework. Since, she uses a cell-phone to text all the time, she could easily do well with working with other classmates from class at home, by using her cell phone to text her classmates.
Young people use technology to learn because it is very convenient, whether you are using it for media/sound production, writing, and reading. They like using Microsoft and believe that a computer or a phone is a necessity to have. The young people text to learn and communicate with others. A girl learned Japanese, if it weren’t for technology, she wouldn’t have learned the language. A young guy makes music using technology. A girl made up a website where you can upload your photos.
These three technologies, television, computer, and cell-phone, have impacted the way I learn new information in many different ways. I used the television to see how people speak in conversation and interact with each others, and I pick up a lot of words and phrases along with that. This has expanded my vocabulary and led me to use them in my own conversations. Using the computer, I learn a lot about what is going on in the world. For instance, I might be on the weather website to see what is going to happen in the today and in the upcoming days. It might want to see if it’s going to rain or shine and what the temperature will be. I use my cell phone and I learn about what is going on with my friends, family, other people I know, and even about myself. For instance, when I talk all these people, I may learn what is new in their lives and what they are going through at the present time. I also recently got a new job, and I learned more about what I was going to be doing at this job because of a colleague texting me information about it.
There are some similarities and differences between my uses of the three most influential technologies to the ones from the young people in both of these videos. One similarity is that I do going online to use social networking sites, the only difference in this case is that I use face-book to learn or communicate with others, while some of the young people use my-space or twitter, which I don’t use. I also go on the computer and go online to read articles that interest me, and write papers on my word processor. Another similarity is that I do go on my phone too and do a lot of texting with friends and people that I know. It might be related to going out, school, and work. A difference that I have from the kids in the video is that I don’t play any video games. I don’t have any video game systems and I don’t have any time to play video games. Another difference is that I don’t create websites, which was something that was mentioned. I have no idea how to make my own websites. A third difference is that I actually watch television, but most if not all of these kids don’t watch television. I mentioned my purpose of watching television already, but I also see watch baseball and football, as well as world news, for instance the state of our economy.
